Researchers representing the EU Fet Open PRIME project from consortium partner Tampere University (TAU), attended the 18th annual Scandinavian Society for Biomaterials (ScSB2025) conference on May 6th – 9th 2025, and presented the PRIME project.
Hosted at the historic Vanajanlinna mansion, near Hämeenlinna, in scenic Finland, the conference had an exceptional scientific program, bringing together researchers, students, and industry professionals from across the world to foster collaboration in biomaterials science. This year, the theme focused on physiologically relevant biomaterials, exploring their applications in medical and biomedical contexts through keynote lectures, oral and poster presentations, and rapid-fire sessions.
Key note speakers included Professor Marcy Zenobi-Wong, ETH Zurich, Switzerland; Professor Ruth Cameron, University of Cambridge, UK; Senior Scientist Claude Oelschlaeger, Karlsruhe Institute for Technology, Germany; Associate Professor Class Willem Visser, University of Twente, Netherlands.

Dr. Taina Viheriälä from TAU represented the PRIME project, presenting to the prestigious audience the overarching goals of EU Fet Open PRIME project and focusing on TAU’s contributions to developing the encapsulation device, along with other project partners.
Of her experience at ScSB, Dr. Taina Viheriälä said “Attending the Scandinavian Society for Biomaterials (ScSB) 2025 conference was not only an opportunity to attend a fantastic scientific gathering – it was a truly enriching experience. The sessions were intellectually stimulating, with inspiring talks on physiologically relevant biomaterials and lively discussions amongst peers. It was a great opportunity to share the work we have been doing within the EU Fet Open PRIME project.”
